Shiawassee County gets its name from the Shiawassee River which enters the County near
the southeast corner, passes throught the villages of Byron and Vernon, the cities of
Corunna and Owosso, and from there flows north into Saginaw Bay.
The name Shiawassee is derived from Indian lore. One popular translation is "rolling waters" or "sparkling waters". Another interpretation is "the water which lies straight ahead". |

The Maple River area was settled in 1857 and this church was built in 1868. It is now used by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Mormons. Inside is the original altar rail, the gift of two local farmers who settled their dispute of ownership of a tree by cutting the tree down and making it into the altar rail. |

Shiatown is also the location of the Shiatown Dam which once provided electrical power to the area. Shiawassee Town (Shiatown) was platted to be the State Capital, but this dream was never realized. It is said that it was the Capital for one day as State records were being transported from Detroit, the state's first capital, to Lansing. |
